GEO Mountains' membership has been redefined. In order to continue receiving GEO Mountains news, GEO Mountains members should now subscribe to the MRI Expert Database. GEO Mountains Task Groups have also been updated and you can join them now for future activities starting soon!
GEO Mountains Membership
As announced last month, we will be using the new version of the MRI Expert Database to keep track of the GEO Mountains membership. Please therefore kindly create / update your profile in the database as soon as possible, making sure to tick the box "GEO Mountains Membership". As a reminder, anyone working on mountain data and information in any capacity, in any region(s), is welcome to join. Please also ensure that you tick the box to make your profile public, so others can find you (see picture below). You can also take the opportunity to subscribe to the MRI global newsletter, if you are not already. In a few months' time, these emails will only be sent to GEO Mountains Members as per the database.

Join & shape the 2024-2025 GEO Mountains Task Groups!
We are excited to invite members of the GEO Mountains community to actively engage in our upcoming activities! As we prepare for our next phase of activities for 2024–2027, we aim to redefine and rejuvenate our Task Groups (TGs), further developing and evolving the groups initiated in 2022.
The GEO Mountains Task Groups are composed of members from our community, which includes anyone registered in the MRI Expert Database. These groups work collaboratively with other members and the GEO Mountains secretariat to achieve specific outputs within defined timelines. Each Task Group undertakes sub-activities and objectives, evolving as their tasks are completed. Members have the flexibility to join one or more TG for either short-term or long-term contributions, depending on their availability and interests in completing specific outputs.
We are in the process of redefining six new Task Groups and welcome your participation:
- Inventories: Contribute to the collective effort of enhancing data discoverability by participating in GEO Mountains’ inventories and coverage analyses.
- Regional Engagement Activities: Help create knowledge products like syntheses or policy briefs, and support follow-up activities from our Regional Workshops Series, including technical training and capacity building tailored to regional needs.
- Global Policy Outreach: Engage in GEO Mountains’ advocacy activities related to International Years, United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Conference of the Parties (COPs), and other global policy forums.
- Treaties Spatialisation: Join a group focused on improving the understanding of international environmental agreements' coverage across global mountain regions.
- Essential Mountain Variables: Identify and help prioritise a set of Essential Variables specific to mountain areas, ensuring the requirements meet mountain-specific needs.
- Contributions to Global Assessments: Contribute to assessment-related syntheses products, addressing knowledge needs for initiatives like the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 7th assessment.
These TGs are dynamic and may evolve based on the level of interest and engagement from our members. We are also open to new contributions and propositions for additional Task Groups.
If you are interested in participating or proposing a new Task Group, please fill in the form below. The deadline for submissions is 30 June 2024.
We look forward to your engagement and involvement in shaping the future activities of GEO Mountains!
