A compilation of information regarding four projects supported by the GEO Mountains Small Grants Programme 2023 was selected for inclusion in a high-profile Mountain Partnership publication entitled ‘Promoting innovation and tradition: Solutions for climate change adaptation in mountains’.
Whilst the report focused on specific examples of climate change adaptation solutions, the inclusion of the GEO Mountains projects related to monitoring, data, and information underlines the crucial importance of this fundamental work in tracking climate change and its impacts to identify and ultimately implement appropriate adaptation responses.
The four projects highlighted are as follows:
The report was released during a dedicated event entitled “Mountain solutions for a sustainable future – innovation, adaptation, and youth” at the headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) on International Mountain Day, 11 December 2024.
At the event, the inaugural Mountain Future Award winners were also announced, one for each of the categories “Youth”, “Adaptation”, and “Innovation”:
- Innovation: Revitalizing Indigenous Wisdom for Climate Adaptation (Rwanda).
- Youth: Mountain Youth Hub (global platform)
- Adaptation: Acres of Ice (India)
The winners will receive seed funding, project visibility, and support from the FAO Mountain Partnership Secretariat, backed by the governments of Italy, Switzerland, and Andorra, as well as the FAO. Further information about the event is available here.
We are extremely grateful to the Principal Investigators of the four GEO Mountains projects featured for helping to prepare the submission material based on their projects’ motivations and outcomes alongside the GEO Mountains Secretariat.
