GEO Mountains is co-led by the Mountain Research Initiative (MRI) and the National Research Council of Italy (CNR). The GEO Mountains Secretariat is hosted by the Mountain Research Initiative (MRI) at the Centre for Development and Environment (CDE), University of Bern, Switzerland.

GEO Mountains also benefits from communications and other support from the central GEO Secretariat, which is based in Geneva, Switzerland.
