GEO Mountains is an Initiative of the GEO Work Programme 2023-2025.
The Initiative is co-led by the Mountain Research Initiative (MRI) (a GEO Participating Organisation) and the National Research Council of Italy (CNR). The GEO Mountains Secretariat is hosted by the MRI at the University of Bern, Switzerland.
Representatives of GEO Mountains engage with each of the four current GEO Working Groups (Capacity Development, Climate Change, Disaster Risk Reduction, and Data).
During the period 2019-2023, GEO Mountains is contributing to the Adaptation at Altitude programme of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), which provides crucial financial and practical support.
In its earlier stages, significant resources were invested in the Initiative by the MRI, the USGS Land Change Science Program, and the ECOPOTENTIAL and NextData projects (which were led by CNR). Many generous in-kind contributions were made by participants themselves, and small grants were provided by organisations such as Future Earth and the European Space Agency (ESA). We are extremely grateful for all of this support.
