Become a Member

GEO Mountains is an open and inclusive network. If you have an interest or expertise in mountain monitoring, data, and information — whether as a research scientist, data provider, environmental manager, government official, practitioner, NGO member, policymaker, or any other interested party — you are warmly invited to join. Members can contribute their time and expertise to help achieve our objectives, or simply stay informed through regular updates from the network.

How to Join the GEO Mountains Network

  1. Create or update your profile in the MRI Expert Database.
  2. In the final stage, labeled ‘Preferences,’ check the ‘GEO Mountains Membership’ box to confirm your membership.
  3. To make your profile visible to other members and the public, tick the ‘Public Profile’ box.
  4. If you would like to receive the MRI Global Newsletter, which regularly features GEO Mountains content, select ‘Newsletter Subscription.’

Membership Benefits

  • Make an impact: Contribute to closing observation gaps in mountain regions, with tangible policy and practical outcomes, in response to the rapid changes affecting the world’s mountains.
  • Collaborate globally: Join GEO Mountains Task Groups to share best practices, collaborate with experts worldwide, and receive recognition for your contributions (e.g., co-authorship or other acknowledgements).
  • Increase visibility: Highlight your independent work and projects related to mountain monitoring, data, and information through blog articles, featured community projects, presentations at GEO Mountains events, or external speaking opportunities.
  • Support project sustainability: Help maintain the visibility, sustainability, and long-term impact of short-term projects dedicated to data and monitoring.
  • Access funding opportunities: Become eligible to apply for GEO Mountains or GEO funding programs.
  • Attend events: Gain eligibility to participate in GEO Mountains events or represent the network at external meetings.
  • Stay informed: Receive regular news, event announcements, and updates on funding opportunities related to GEO Mountains, as well as mountain data and information more broadly.

General Expectations of Members

  • Engage with other Members in a constructive, fair, and inclusive manner, consistent with the MRI’s guiding principles for engaging in MRI activities.
  • Give your time and expertise on a voluntary basis to contribute to and participate in our activities, projects, events, or Task Groups
  • Support and get involved in our thematic advocacy efforts on mountain data and observations
  • Practice and advocate for the principles of Open Data and Open Science.
