Task Groups

GEO Mountains Task Groups 2024 – 2027

We invite members of the GEO Mountains community to take an active role in shaping our work. During our 2024–2027 phase, we are refreshing and strengthening our Task Groups (TGs) — building on those established in 2022 to better deliver on our shared objectives.

The Task Groups bring together GEO Mountains members (i.e., individuals registered in the MRI Expert Database who have indicated their interest in participating) to collaborate with each other and the GEO Mountains Secretariat. Each TG focuses on producing specific outputs within defined timelines. Members can engage in one or more groups, contributing on either a short- or long-term basis according to their interests and availability.

We currently have six Task Groups, each addressing a key area of GEO Mountains’ mission:

  1. Inventories: Enhance data discoverability by maintaining and expanding GEO Mountains’ inventories and conducting coverage analyses.

  2. Regional Engagement Activities: Build on the 2023–24 Regional Workshop Series by developing knowledge products (e.g., policy briefs) and supporting follow-up initiatives such as capacity building and technical training.

  3. Global Policy Outreach: Support GEO Mountains’ advocacy across global policy processes, including the UNFCCC, COPs, and other international fora.

  4. Treaties Spatialisation: Improve understanding of how international environmental agreements apply across the world’s mountain regions.

  5. Essential Mountain Variables: Identify and refine priority variables for mountain monitoring, enhancing data comparability and supporting research and policy applications.

  6. Contributions to Global Assessments: Contribute to synthesis products that inform major global assessments such as the IPCC’s Seventh Assessment Report.

These Task Groups are dynamic and evolving, adapting to member interests and emerging needs. We also welcome proposals for new Task Groups that align with GEO Mountains’ objectives.
