GEO Mountains gave two presentations at this year’s GCOS Climate Observation Conference, 17-19 October 2022.

The first was “Coverage of In Situ Climatological Observations in the World’s Mountains”, and the second was “Toward a definition of Essential Mountain Climate Variables.” Both talks were given by Dr. James Thornton, GEO Mountains Scientific Project Officer. The latter talk in particular stimulated discussions with other communities who are also seeking to “tailor” the general (global) Essential Climate Variables framework to meet their specific needs.

More generally, the conference focused on activities and solutions that help to achieve a fully implemented, sustainable, and fit-for-purpose global observing system for climate. It also provided the occasion to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of GCOS and take stock of the progress the international observing community achieved in the last three decades.
