On 6-8 November 2023, the Mountain Research Initiative (MRI), GEO Mountains, and multiple partner organisations including the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), the Himalayan University Consortium (HUC), and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), co-convened a workshop in Kathmandu, Nepal.
Smart EcoMountains project is a joint initiative to create a physical and a virtual research infrastructure to enable the compilation of biodiversity and other data in the region.
The GEO Mountains General Inventory is a free online resource that seeks to provide comprehensive metadata related to open datasets and data portals that may be useful for applications in mountain areas. Following the release of v1 in March 2022, v1.4 is now out!
GEO Mountains' second General Meeting of the year was held on 29 November 2023. This online meeting provided an opportunity to update network members about recent activities and developments, including the outcomes of the recent GEO Week and GEO Ministerial Meeting in Cape Town. Two invited presentations from projects which align closely with GEO Mountains' objectives were given, and time was also reserved for open discussion amongst participants.
On 27 October 2023, the Mountain Research Initiative (MRI), GEO Mountains, and multiple partner organisations including the Albertine Rift Conservation Society (ARCOS), the University of York (UK), and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), co-convened a workshop in Kigali, Rwanda within the context of the World Climate Research Programme Open Science Conference 2023.
The GEO Week and Ministerial Meeting 2023, held in Cape Town, South Africa from 6-10 November, focused on "The Earth is talking."
The workshop, held from the 25 to 27 June 2023 in Bern, Switzerland, aimed to refine the concept of the Uniform High-Elevation Observing Platform (UHOP) and discuss how the prospective network could help deliver an improved understanding of climate change across different elevation gradients and potentially also support other applications such as Early Warning Systems.
We would like to sincerely thank all members of GEO Mountains who submitted a proposal to the GEO Mountains Small Grants Programme 2023. In total, 96 proposals were received, which made the selection process very challenging!
On the 5 July 2023, the Mountain Research Initiative (MRI), GEO Mountains, the Scientific Network for the Caucasus Mountain Region & Sustainable Caucasus, UNEP/GRID-Geneva, and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) co-convened a workshop in Kutaisi, Georgia within the context of the Caucasus Mountain Forum 2023.
The GEO Symposium 2023, at which the Post-2025 Strategy and Work Programme Activities were discussed, took place on the 13 and 14 June. It was immediately followed on the 15 and 16 June by the first GEO Open Data & Open Knowledge (ODOK) Workshop.
