Between the 18-20 April 2023, the Mountain Research Initiative (MRI), GEO Mountains, the University of Reading, the Central-Asian Regional Glaciological Center under the auspices of UNESCO (CARGC), and the Kazakhstan Institute of Geography and Water Security co-convened a workshop in Almaty, Kazakhstan on the topic of “Mountain Observatories”.

GEO Advances Use of Earth Observations for National Adaptation Plans

GEO joined the eighth NAP Expo held in Santiago, Chile, in March 2023 to share and gain insights on how to integrate Earth observation data and solutions into successful climate adaptation planning and implementation. GEO Mountains was proud to be part of their presentation at this expo.

Job Opportunity: GEO Mountains Scientific Project Officer (Entry Level, 0.4 – 0.6 FTE)

To support the growing scope of work at GEO Mountains, we seek an enthusiastic and motivated Scientific Project Officer to work closely with the co-leads and the network coordinator on multiple technical tasks associated with the 2023-2025 GEO Mountains implementation plan. This is an entry-level position suitable for a student or recent graduate. The position is based at the MRI Coordination Office, which is hosted at the Centre for Development and Environment (CDE) at the University of Bern. The start date is 1 April 2023 at the latest.

Outcomes of the GEO Mountains General Meeting, November 2022

On 28 November, GEO Mountains held its second General Meeting of 2022. The meeting sought to present an assessment of progress achieved during the 2020–2022 Implementation Plan period, as well as to communicate the scope and priorities of the Initiative over the 2023–2025 period, considering our recent renewed endorsement by the GEO Programme Board. Four short presentations on recent or ongoing projects which GEO Mountains is either undertaking or contributing to were also included in the agenda, as was time for discussion.

Outcomes of Training Course “Analysis of Vegetation Dynamics Data in the Andes in the Current Scenario of Global Change”

On 13 October 2022, Dr. James Thornton gave an online presentation on behalf of GEO Mountains as part of the course/webinar series "Analysis of vegetation dynamics data in the Andes in the current scenario of global change”. The course was coordinated by CONDESAN, and supported by GEO Mountains.
